Driving in NYC - Taxis & Car Services
Driving in NYC
If you are driving in the city, you must be aggressive, and defensive. Taxi cabs are notoriously frightening drivers, and take risks that may put other drivers at risk too. Be alert at all times, and try not to fall into the temptation of incessant honking!
PARKING is one of the biggest problems a driver faces in New York City. Be aware that Meter Readers are very prompt, and if you are late, even by 5 minutes in getting money in the parking meter, you will likely face a stiff parking ticket (expect $50 or more).

TAXIs & Car Services
If you are traveling via taxicab, be aware of the 2 types of cabs in New York: Yellow Cabs & "Gypsy" Cabs. There are also Car Services, for which you must usually call and make a reservation, or request a pickup.
NOTE: Taxi drivers are not always the NYC experts you may expect them to be. It is in your best interest to know how to get where you are going when you get in the cab. Get yourself a good map and keep it with you until you know your way around.
Yellow Cabs (actually yellow in color) are the only taxis with regulated (metered) rates. Expect a minimum of $2.50 just to get in the car, and then 50 cents per unit thereafter. (Units vary from 1/8 of a mile to a portion of a minute...it all varies according to the speed, and the traffic.) During prime time (8pm + ) you will be charged a surcharge on top of the regular rate.
The driver's name and license number are posted in the cab for your reference. If you leave something in the cab, having this information is one of the only ways of tracing it.
"Gypsy" Cabs and Car Services are regulated by the Taxi & Limousine Commission, and therefore have a license plate that begins with "T." They are generally dark colored cars...some are lovely Lincoln Continentals, some are beat-up LTDs. If you are at the airport, Gypsy Cabs are discouraged. For some neighborhoods in NYC (outlying areas, outer boroughs), however, Gypsy Cabs are your only alternative, as Yellow Cabs are scarce.
Gypsy Cabs have no regular rates, so you should know how much your trip might cost in a Yellow Cab and offer something similar to the driver as payment for your trip. If you negotiate a rate with the driver before the trip begins, you might get a better deal, and you might not. Gypsy Cabs are not to be feared, just be smart and alert.
Upscale Car Services range from fancy corporate services to airport shuttle services. Some have the word "Limousine" in their names, but most are not going to pick you up in a stretch limo unless you specifically request it (and pay extra!). You can find car services advertised in the yellow pages, and in airplane magazines, etc. Shop around for the best deals to and from the airport, but remember most rates do not include tip and bridge tolls.
